The Trail Track and Field Club will host the Zone 1 B.C. Summer Games qualifying meet on May 25 at Haley Park in Warfield, and is inviting athletes from across the Kootenays to compete.
This highly anticipated track meet welcomes athletes of all ages and skill levels, while offering an opportunity for participants to showcase their talent and qualify for the prestigious B.C. Games.
“The B.C. Summer Games offer a unique experience for athletes across the province to come together in their respective sports,” said Trail Track and Field head coach Kylie Lakevold, who competed in the BC Summer Games herself and won pentathlon gold.
Athletes born in 2015 and earlier are invited to compete in various events at the upcoming meet. However, only athletes born in 2009 and 2010 will be considered for the B.C. Games Zone 1 team.
Lakevold, who also serves as the Zone 1 Athletics B.C. Games representative, will oversee the selection process to fill the team roster for the upcoming games. The 2024 Games is scheduled to be hosted by Maple Ridge from July 18 to 21.
“For many athletes, this will be their first major competition experience, but the Games are equal parts fun and athleticism,” said Lakevold. “Our zone will travel as a team to Maple Ridge and will experience an inspiring opening ceremonies, athlete accommodations, fun events and athletic competition.”
Youth ages 14 to 15 have the chance to compete in athletics and represent Zone 1, which encompasses the Regional Districts of Central Kootenay, East Kootenay, Kootenay Boundary, and Electoral Area A of Columbia-Shuswap Regional District.
This includes prominent centers such as Castlegar, Cranbrook, Creston, Fernie, Golden, Grand Forks, Kimberley, Nelson, Rossland, and Trail.
The Zone 1 BC Games Athletics team will comprise a maximum of 12 female and 12 male athletes. Participants may be selected for three individual events and one relay, or they may opt for the pentathlon and one relay.
